Sara Du Terroil has over 20 years experience as an advocate.
Formerly a labor law attorney in the UK, Sara's advocacy journey in the US began when her elder son was born with significant developmental disabilities, including autism and intellectual disability, She quickly learned to navigate health insurance, special education, systems advocacy including social services navigation and legislative policy work. The more help he needed, the harder it was to find. All too often, the insurance companies "pull the rug" out from vulnerable families just when they need them most.
Sara became a licensed health insurance consultant in order to assist others through this process and navigate their health plans to fully benefit from the consumer protection frameworks that exist following the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This accountability helps reduce the overall financial pressures that arise when seeking healthcare for lifelong conditions, especially behavioral health. Sara is familiar with the disability service systems across the board, including Medicaid.
Even as a non-attorney consumer advocate, Sara uses the skills she developed working as a solicitor in the United Kingdom where she advised on equity and compliance in the workplace and dealt with cases of race, sex, religious and disability discrimination. She helped clients on both sides of contracts, drafted many grievances and appeals, negotiated settlement agreements, and conducted training to teach managers how to resolve employee grievances before they became litigation. Now, Sara's mission is to help get healthcare claims across the finish line. In addition to her strong appeals background which emphasizes clear written argument, Sara believes in building relationships in order to inform others and resolve disputes.
Sara is also an experienced legislative and public policy advocate, has given testimony on disability issues on many occasions, and trained others to do the same.
